Solar Attic Fans Keep You from Suffering in the Summer Heat

One of the easiest ways of lowering your air conditioning bills is by installing a solar attic fan. Solar attic fans are ventilation systems designed to draw hot air out of your attic. They are similar to other attic vents and fans, but with one huge advantage.

The advantage of these products is that they run entirely off of solar energy. Each solar roof vent comes with a small solar panel that generates electricity which is then used to power the fan itself. This means that these solar fans will require no additional energy costs once installed, so they can ventilate your attic and thus keep your home cooler. This will allow your air conditioner to not have to run constantly, which can save you a ton of money on your cooling costs in the long run.

Another huge advantage of solar roof fans is that they can be installed very easily and without any major construction, although it is still recommended to have them installed by a certified professional as the installation process requires a hole to be cut directly in your roof. Nonetheless, even with the cost of installation, these products are still quite reasonably priced and are a much more affordable option than a solar air conditioning unit.

solar attic fanWhen deciding to install a solar attic fan, the most important thing to take into consideration is the location of the fan. The majority of models do not contain a battery and are therefore unable to store any excess energy that is created.

This means that the fan will only function when the solar panel is directly exposed to sunlight. Despite this fact, these products are still a very efficient way of keeping your home cooler and lowering your electricity bills while reducing your carbon footprint at the same time.

When searching for a solar fan, the most important thing to pay attention to is the size of the fan. All models are rated to ventilate a certain area, so it is important to make sure that you purchase a product that is rated for your size of attic to ensure the fan will sufficiently cool your home. Conversely, you do not want to spend more money on a fan that is bigger than your needs.

Another important factor is whether you should purchase a roof mounted fan or a gable fan. The roof mounted fans will normally work much better as they are usually exposed to more sunlight than the gable mounted versions. If you do not have a south facing gable, then you should definitely think about the roof mounted models as they will function much better for you.

There are hundreds of different brands and models of solar roof fans available both online and in home improvement stores around the globe. If you are a very tight budget, then you can find some very cheap models that can be purchased for under $50, however these are not recommended. Many of the cheap versions are basically a waste of money since they function very poorly, are cheaply made and often don’t last.

For those who are really serious about purchasing a highly efficient, long lasting attic fan, you would be much better suited to spend the extra money and purchase one of the products that we have reviewed for you below.

Natural Light Solar Attic Fans

solar attic fanThe Natural Light 20-watt Solar Attic Fan is a great addition to any home, keeping you cool without increasing the load on your AC or costing a bundle in electricity usage. As well as cooling your house, the air circulation created by the fan can result in a healthier home and extend the life of your roof by drawing out the moisture.

The unit doesn’t require any wiring to install, and includes an adjustable solar panel. There are three different models available, and so there’ll be one suitable for your roof type.

The device is made from powder coated aircraft grade aluminium, providing added durability. In fact, the attic fan lasts for so long that it’s got the best warranty in the industry: a 25-year warranty on the solar panel, the housing and the motor, if used with natural light! Impressive!

The 20-watt model has a venting capacity of 1800 square feet per fan, and is lovely and quiet. The manufacturer claims that you can barely hear the fan, standing only a few feet away, and can hear nothing from inside the main part of the house.

Unlike other some units, the Natural Light solar fan comes with one large fan. The body is one piece of heavy gauge aluminium with no seams. This makes the body of the fan leak proof, with no additional work required. Because of the materials used, corrosion should not be a problem.

In addition, the low profile and modern design helps it to blend into the design of your house, rather than sticking out from across the street. The solar panel itself is adjustable, so you can angle it to give it the best sun exposure possible.

Like all products installed in your roof, the installation does require a little work, and requires you to cut an installation hole into your roof. The fan will work with any pitch, and will not leak once installed. There are no structural changes or wiring to complete.

The solar attic fan retails for approximately $350, which we believe is a fair price given the many benefits the product has to offer.

Attic Breeze Solar Roof Fans

solar attic fanIf you can afford the extra cost, then Attic Breeze roof fans are probably the best products available on the market, although they are only available in 20 and 25 watt models. Still, they are rated to move more air than the similarly sized Natural Light products.

However, the biggest advantage of the Attic Breeze roof fans is that they come with a lifetime warranty, so you can be guaranteed that your product should last for a long time and you should have no trouble getting a replacement if the fan breaks or stops working.

The Attic Breeze 25W Solar Attic Fan comes with a high pricetag, however. You should expect to pay between $600 and $750 for one fan depending on which one of the various mounting options you choose. Still, these products are the highest rated and best on the market if you can afford the extra cost.
