Things to Consider Before Buying a Solar Electric Fence

One of the biggest advantages of using a solar electric fence is that they can easily be installed by almost anyone, without the need to hire an electrician to do the wiring. Solar electric fences don't have the need for wiring or connecting your fence to the power grid, and they can just as easily be used in towns as they can in the country on farms and ranches.

They are also ideal for use in remote locations where no local power grid is available, such as on cattle ranches. Solar powered electric fences can be used for a variety of purposes, either to keep cattle or other livestock in your field, or to keep other animals such as deer out of your field or garden. Some solar powered electric fences can also be adapted for use as a fence to keep your dog or other pet contained in your yard. Solar powered fences can be purchased either online, or in many home and garden or ranch/ farm supply stores.

Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Solar Electric Fence

There are quite a few things that you should know and take into consideration before deciding to purchase a solar powered electric fence. This list is not comprehensive so always read the instructions that come with your fence before attempting installation.

  • You should never electrify a barb wire fence, as it can cause serious damage to any animal that comes in contact with the fence. Animals can also become stuck in the fence which can possibly cause death as well.

  • solar electric fenceIt is necessary to take into consideration the size of the animals that you are wishing to keep either in or out with your fence. In general, the larger the animal you wish to contain is means the thicker their hide will be. This will help you determine how strong the electrical charge in your fence should be, as it will require much more electricity to keep a cow in your field than it would to keep a deer off of your property.

  • It is also necessary to take in mind the number of animals that will be in your field, as the fence can lose its electricity much quicker if you have many cows constantly touching it. Similarly, you don’t want to have too much voltage in your fence to harm animals that come in contact with it.

  • Make sure you measure out the size of the area that you wish to electrify so you can ensure that your fence has adequate voltage. Most solar electric fence kits come with a recommendation on the size of field that they can be used for. If you don’t have enough voltage for the entire length of your fence, then it can result in weak spots where the fence is barely electrified.

  • You should clear vegetation away from the fence as the fence will slowly lose its charge if it is constantly in contact with plants. This will slowly drain your battery and also lower the voltage of your fence, especially in the areas closest to where the vegetation is in contact with the fence wire.

  • Most solar powered electric fence kits comes with electric fence wire, a solar fence charger, a solar panel, and a deep cycle marine battery, all of which are designed to electrify a specific area. You should not try to add on to the kit in any way as it has been built to certain specifications. If you don’t think the kit will be strong enough, you would be much better to purchase a larger sized kit to ensure your fence has adequate charge.

  • Most solar powered fences will last for several years at least, and some of the more expensive models come with up to ten year full replacements warranties. Although you may need to replace the battery if you notice the fence starts losing its charge.

  • The majority of solar fences on the market are extremely efficient at keeping the battery and the fence itself fully charged. In fact, most of them can keep the fence charged for a full eight weeks even if the solar panel itself never receives any sunlight. This makes them quite reliable so you can feel safe in knowing your fence will always stay electrified.

  • Keep in mind that dry soil does not conduct electricity nearly as well as more moist ground. So if you live in a more arid climate, you may have to add more than the recommended amount of grounding rods to your fence in order for it to function properly.

  • solar electric fencePay close attention to where you want to place the electric fence charger. If you place it within fifty feet or an underground water pipe, phone line, or power line then stray voltage may occur which could damage people or animals that come near to the fence. This can also decrease the voltage and thus the effectiveness of your electric fence as well.

  • You should install your electric fence charger at one end of your fence on a well built mounting surface, while also ensuring that it is in direct sunlight.

  • It is also necessary to make sure that you install your electric fence controller under cover to ensure that it is completely protected from rain or other weather elements.
